PYP Curriculum

Primary Years ProgrammePYP-Eng

The Primary School (KG1 – Grade 5) is an Authorised IB PYP School since March 2015. The PYP programme sets the foundation to develop well-rounded students who are globally-minded and well prepared to enter the Middle Years Programme and later the DP programmes. The PYP standards and practices shape the curricula of the Primary School.

"The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning."

At ABS, the PYP seeks to address students' academic, social, and emotional well-being by encouraging students to become more involved and take responsibility for their own learning. Through the PYP we aim to prepare our students to be active participants in their lifelong journey of learning.

The IB Learner Profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The learner profile provides a long-term vision of education. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose.

Our aim is to develop internationally minded students who are:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Transdisciplinary programme:

The PYP curricular framework incorporates the subject areas of Maths, language, Science, social studies which are organised under six transdisciplinary themes:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How we organise ourselves
  • How the world works
  • Sharing the planet

These global themes allow the students to explore knowledge and concepts and make meaningful connections between disciplines through the units of inquiry explored. Units of inquiry are also supported by the Arts, Physical Education and Religion where possible. ICT is used as a tool to enhance learning. Personal and Social wellbeing is linked to all aspects of student life.
